Lofting is one of the first steps in building a boat, it is the process of taking measurements from a set of plans and drawing them to create the building form. follow me on twitter for other. Though these need to be lofted out for the building process, they are not technically part of the hull lofting. these parts of the boats need not be described in the lofting table, though you may see them there as part of the designers convenience. typically they are described in the boat plans.. Without question, lofting is an essential skill for the boatbuilder. once you’ve mastered it, you can at least start to build any boat for which there are plans. moreover, you’re going to be able to interpret plans and better comprehend the shape of the vessel, and what the building process will be.. 
lofting boat plans video In his book “boatbuilding,” chapelle says “…there was never a boat built in which too much lofting had been done.” i took this to heart – lofting took 6 months! Lofting time for a design will vary from a day for a single chine hull to maybe two weeks for a large and complicated round bilge hull. taken as part of the total duration of the boat building project, that is a very small proportion and certainly not worthy of compromising the final result..
