Gonzo has named a good reason. compared to the wine glass section shape, there are several other reasons for using a plank keel. one is that the boat will sit upright when grounded, there is actually a small decrease in wetted surface, and a small decrease in draft... The inner planking is made up of thin, narrow planks of mahogany set edge to edge at about a forty-five degree angle to the keel. the outer planking runs longitudinally. typically, the inner planking of an original bottomed double-planked boat will be buckled and rotted, especially in the lowest point of the bilge.. Measurements should be made from the deck of the boat down to the keel rabbit, which is the lowest point of the boat. the girth of the boat at each bulkhead frame point along the hull will determine the width of each plank at that point, with each plank changing width along the line of the boat..

(a strake is one row of planking all around the boat. so far on lion, each strake has consisted of 3 or 4 planking boards per side.) then the garboard (lowest strake next to the keel) will be hung and planking will proceed up to meet the topside planks..
